Default Audio Out

Dear Forum member, I have been searching the internet for a while, but couldn't find a good solution or good explanation for my problem yet.

I have a very old speak n spell with push bottons and no line out socket.
my friend who gave it to me tried to make an audio out by simply replacing the internal speaker with an RCA cable, but the sound result is completely awful.
so i try to find a better solution atm, I heared rumors about a transformer that can be used to replace the speaker, but couldn't find more detais about that. although it seems to make sense to me in theory, to remove a coil with a coil. I'm wondering if someone could help me out there, as its kind of disappointing to have a speak n spell hooked up with midi without a proper audio out. so any hints appreciated..

I'm not sure, but this could be as simple as adding a resistor in series with one of the speaker output lines and connecting it to the tip of the phone jack. Then wire the phone jack sleeve to Speak ground.

Maybe the levels are too high? I've used this circuit for tapping into a toy speaker output:
