Default UMR2 - atari2600

hi everyone!

i would like to install the UMR2 into an atari 2600

like in midi2600(umr) i would connect the umr2 into the keypad section for note/clock messages.

if anyone has any info for this, please reply, that will be so appreciated!

Hi Avinoandrea,

By searching for atari 2600 keypad pinout I found this:

http://emu-docs.org/Atari%202600/Con.../2600cont.html

Another resource would be the MIDI2600 design and source code, available here:

http://forum.highlyliquid.com/showthread.php?t=872

It looks like you'd want to set up the UMR2 for active-low select signals, like this:

And then, joystick port pins 5, 6, and 9 are the select lines. Pins 1, 2, 3 and 4 are data lines.

That should work for one keypad input. If you get that far, let me know and we can figure out getting MIDI input feeding into both controller ports at once.

Hi Avinoandrea,

Please download the UMR2 user manual from the product page:

http://www.highlyliquid.com/#umr2

It includes descriptions and wiring diagrams for those terminals.

Would this also work with other Atari hardware that uses the same joystick ports ... for example, Atari 7800, 5200, or 400/800/XL/XE computers?

For keypads and other controllers with matrixed buttons, yes, the UMR2 could be made to work.

For non matrixed, common-ground switches (like those in the original 2600 joysticks, for example), a general-purpose MIDI decoder would be a better choice. For example, you could simply wire an MSA-P or MSA-R output relay in parallel with each switch in the controller.
