Hi DTownSMR, welcome to the forum.
You are correct. The MSA-R (or MSA-P) should work equally well. The MSA-R outputs are just like simple on/off switches that can be wired the same way as any simple on/off footswitch, except that they respond to MIDI control instead of your foot.
