Default maximum MIDI cable lengths & distances

Hey all,
I've read the "official" maximum length on MIDI cables is only 50ft.

Anyone out there have experience with much longer cables??

Whats the unofficial maximum??

any cable recomendations??

Would twisted pair shielded be better??

Are there signal "boosters" available to increase cable lengths??

How about battery operated repeaters?

Hi Dana,

I let this one go since I haven't experimented firsthand with long cable lengths.

The word on cable runs direct from the original MIDI spec is here:

http://home.roadrunner.com/~jgglatt/tech/midispec.htm

(See the "Hardware" link, top left.)

50ft is the "maxium recommended" length, but there's no reason that a longer run wouldn't work. I suppose it would just require some case-specific trial-and-error. The variables that come to mind are the quality of the receiving circuitry and the amount of ambient EMF noise.

Any standard MIDI cable is shielded twisted pair.

The shield is connected to case ground of the sending (MIDI Out/Thru) device, but is unconnected at the receiving (MIDI In) end. The floating shield at the receiving end might be especially important for longer cable lengths--something to consider since you're wiring your own MIDI In port.

If you have a need for a very long run, I believe that there are commercial extenders available (perhaps they use ethernet with a converter on either end, or something similar).

I would need to know the environment you plan to use this in before I would even recommend considering cat5.

Default MIDI to RS485 ??? Any Thoughts

All,
Im still not happy with MIDI's maximum cable length of 50Ft. Any thoughts on a MIDI over RS-485 converter??

MIDI = 31.25 Kbaud max 50Ft
RS485 = 100Kbaud max 1200 meters
