Default Arduino MIDI file player??

Hey All,
Im looking for a small inexpensive, MIDI file player/recorder that I can contain along side the Highly liquid decoders, on my MIDI air horn rig. Currently Im using a laptop, but it has its own problems. Ive looked at the ones that are Ipod/ phone based, too expensive.

I did a quick google and found a few Arduino based SD card storage, home built units.

Anyone out there have any experience with them???

John ever consider developing something similar??

Hi Dana,

Yes, this is "on the list" and I will be exploring the development of such a product very soon. I can definitely see how you could use it.

I'm interested to hear how the project goes.

On a related 'note', I've recently purchased an old Roland SD-35 Midi Player for a discount due a non-functioning 3.5" floppy drive. The drive will be replaced with an emulator like this (http://lotharek.pl/product.php?pid=13) for SD card input. Not an Arduino solution, obviously, but it will give me the flexibility to use on-board sounds or drive an external device, like my Roland XV-2020. It's also a simple mixer, being able to receive a single stereo audio input signal selectable at mic/line/inst level. Could make life interesting! Karaoke, anyone?

Although it has the capability to decode MIDI/WAV/MP3 files, it's output is audio. Meaning it is meant to be connected to a speaker and not as a MIDI data output device that can communicate to the MD24 or other decoder device.

As a preemptive hit, I asked the seller if they planned to offer a MIDI sequence data record and playback device in the future. It's a market wide open to the person who can produce this type of device in the <$100 segment. And bypass the one ebay entity marketing their grossly overpriced science project .

Default A MIDI Arduino project

All,
Still looking for the MIDI file player on a board. I found this guys projects;

John,
Ive been thinking about this as a way to overcome the MIDI 50Ft max distance, by embedding the file player in my rig, but controlling it remotely using some long distance wiring or wireless protocol. any thoughts?

Hi Dana,

I haven't tried the off-the-shelf commercial products out there, but to try one of them is the best advice I could give. I posted a link to another product in that thread:

Hi Dana.
If you're interested, I'll sell you my proof-of-concept MIDI sequence recorder/player at the $60 parts cost alone. It was assembled using point to point wiring on a breadboard. Construction is very high quality for a prototype device. It only needs a power source and case to finish it.
It requires regulated 5vdc @250ma for operation.
It can record files through the MIDI in port DIN socket, and and play files on the MIDI output port DIN socket. An SD card is used as the memory device. Up to 255 separate files can be recorded and saved. The socketed SD card is included.

It cannot play MIDI files directly downloaded from the internet, and copied onto the SD card. You must first record them to the device through the MIDI input first.
A two line 24 character display, with stop, play record, and four menu direction buttons.

It is hard coded for use on MIDI track 0. There's no dip switch channel selector.

The program was built on the ATMEGA168 (same as Arduino).

I have $60 in parts into it. Add $6 for postage.

PM me if you want it.

It would be perfect file recorder/player for your pneumatic jihad device

Regards, Jeff
