Default MSA-T for MIDI-controlled power relays for motors and lights

There are a few different approaches to controlling higher powered devices (motors, lights, etc) using a MIDI decoder. The easiest is to use an MSA-T to trigger power relays that you provide.

The exact relay that you use will vary based on your project requirements. Many inexpensive power relays are available. Here are about 10,000 choices:

The selection above can be narrowed down by using the various search parameters. For this application, we want:

- Coil type = non latching

Assuming that you have a 9VDC power supply to power the MSA-T, you can also select:

- Coil voltage = 9VDC

You can also select the contact form for a simple SPST normally open configuration.

- Contact form = SPST-NO

This narrows things down considerably. Now, you can select a relay based on the contact rating and switching voltage.

Here's a relay (LKT1AF-9V) with a contact rating of 5A (maximum) and switching voltage of 277VAC (maximum).

The datasheet includes a schematic that looks like this:



The part on the left is the coil. The part on the right is the contact, which is basically a switch controlled by the coil. More details can be found in the wiki here.

Eight of these relays can be connected to the MSA-T as follows:



For the diodes in the diagram, use 1N4004 or something similar.

This will provide 8 independent MIDI-controlled switches for your motors or lights.

When you say "This will provide 8 independent MIDI-controlled switches for your motors or lights."

Which kind of lights? 120AC or 12DC?

Given the diagram above, the lights are being controlled by user-supplied relays. So it is the contact rating of the relays that determine what type of load can be switched. The relay data sheet should be consulted.

If the MSA-T is being used to directly control a load (for example, a solenoid or a light of some kind), then the load must be DC only. The current limits are specified in the MSA-T hardware user manual.
